I sat my exam and managed to get 25 out of 26 correct which is a pass! The pass mark is 19 so it was worth all the studying.
I found the exam fairly easy thanks to the training course from EssexHam and the experience I’ve gained over many years of tinkering. I highly recommend doing the EssexHam course and they have a good course book as well if that’s your way of learning.

You get the results immediately but then you have to wait up to a week for the official certificate from the RSGB. Once I received my certificate I created an account on the Ofcom website and applied for my free Radio Amateur licence. You’ll need to choose a callsign (yes you can choose your own now from a list of available callsigns) and I was helped with this once again by EssexHam who have a handy available callsign checker. I chose M7XHW as HW is the vehicle registration prefix for the Isle of Wight.
Within minutes I had a confirmation email telling me that my licence was now active and confirming my callsign! After all that work I am now M7XHW, licenced to broadcast on amateur radio.
Next to choose a radio and start building my shack!
